Fuji Superia 400 Film Review by Jessica Bellinger

I love Fuji Superia 400 because I can literally buy it at Walmart or a drug store if I need to, and it’s super comparable to most 400 speed 35mm films. The colors are beautiful and vibrant, and some of my favorite images are done on this film. If I don’t have access to Fuji 400h medium format (find on Amazon), I opt for Fuji Superia 400 (find on Amazon). For engagements, weddings, and personal work, it’s awesome!

The Look and Style of Fuji Superia 400

It’s a bright and vibrant film with some warmth and perfect contrast. It bumps the colors to the perfect vibrancy for my taste. I use it a lot for travel photography.

How to Meter Fuji Superia 400

I meter all my 400 speed films at 200. It’s just like any 400 speed and loves light. So with great light and good settings, it’s a dream.

Where Fuji Superia 400 Shines and Where It Struggles

Fuji Superia 400 performs best in good light. I shoot it indoors with window light, and, when I shoot it at a low enough shutter, it’s beautiful. It’s so versatile and can be used for landscapes and portraits both indoors and out. It should be more popular than it is.

It does struggle when it lacks light, though. It starts to get muddy and grainy. At dusk and in low indoor light, it will start to do this. I have also noticed in some overcast light it gets under exposed easily.

Hey Jessica, great article. When shooting a 400 film at 200 do you let the lab know to compensate for the exposure or develop as is?

Hey! I develop as is. I do all neutral settings with the fuji frontier scanner. I like my photos a little overexposed so they usually have a bright pop that way. The one specific photo of the surfer was shot under exposed and metered for the sky to silhouette the surfer. I cant even remember the settings. I guessed on them!

Yes most of the time. As you can see on the sunset portraits, I metered for the whole scene most likely. But when I shoot regular portraits, I meter for shadows.

I Jessica, very helpful post here. Then, while shooting at 200 ISO, do you still meter for shadows ? Thanks.

Hello Jessica,
I like your result with the Superia 400 at 200 ISO !
Especially the surfer
When you say the surfer is under exposed, you have shoot at -1EV or simply metered for the sky at 200 ISO ?
