Today, we’re featuring a beautiful Mediterranean travel series from Alex van Leeuwen. Here is more from Alex about capturing these images and his first experience with solo traveling…
This trip was a long overdue escape from London. Generally in my photography, I tend to stray away from taking photos that are too busy, or with many people in them – I prefer cleaner, quieter landscapes – something that lines up with my own more reserved personality.
Especially needing a complete break from the hustle and bustle of big city life, it’s no surprise that I found myself choosing to go to smaller and quieter islands (e.g. Koufonisi, Kythnos, and others) and mainly keeping to myself while I was there. As a first foray into solo travelling, I loved it, and, as a particularly active person, I found myself hiking around the islands pretty much all day, every day. This lent itself to the images that you see here – rarely featuring people, and when people are in a shot, they’re almost always in wides. As a cinematographer by trade, I also found myself drawn to the Mediterranean light – hence the themes of sunbaked exteriors, a strong use of contrast, and long shadows.
