Today, we’re featuring an experimental film photography series from Vic Martin. Here is more from Vic about how he used film soup to capture unique images of New Zealand…

How do you photograph a place like New Zealand, already captured magnificently in cinema and photography? And how do you shoot it on a family trip, when the prospect of dedicated photo days are almost out of the question? These are questions I’ve often faced, whether in Colorado’s mountains, Nevada’s deserts, California’s coasts, and so on. The snapshot style has grown with me, as have experimental techniques. Because – as far as I’m concerned – I can’t capture locations like New Zealand in a new way, especially without the benefits of time, patience, and perfect light.

When I went to New Zealand with my family, I loaded several of my film cameras with stocks I knew I was going to soup while I traveled. During our daily jaunts – through Hobbiton and Milford sound, along pastures, during Maori ceremonies – I snapped away. And in the evenings, I returned to my lodging ready to soup my finished rolls. I used local lake and seawater, foliage such as wildflowers and wild lavender, and arbitrary items like pine cones and bird feathers. I brewed my film in these bits of New Zealand and let it take hold of the images – I let the country have a say on the final results.
