This week’s film photography feature is from Los Angeles based photographer Michelle Sharp. Michelle recently graduated from UC Santa Barbara and was able to use film to capture a trip to Santa Cruz Island. Here is more from Michelle about her experience…
Through one of my art classes, I had the unique opportunity to visit the Nature Conservancy on Santa Cruz Island. It has been undergoing a large-scale restoration project to conserve its natural plants and animals and is not open to the public.
I have now been to the island 4 times with the same art professor. I have learned about its unique history (including a cryptic haunted house), geology, and wildlife via firsthand experience and research for my art projects. On my last two trips, I brought my film cameras along, and the results have been some my favorite rolls I’ve ever shot. I sought to show off the island’s natural beauty while documenting my classmates’ experiences as they discover it.
Analog cameras and films used: Yashica FX-D Quartz (Find at KEH Camera or eBay), Nikon Action Touch (Find at KEH Camera or eBay) | Kodak Gold 200 (Find on Amazon)
