Our latest feature is a beautiful travel story from film photographer Anna Rösch. Here is more from Anna about photographing Apulia…

When I travel, I rarely pick up my camera to simply capture what I see. For me, interesting travel photography is both about the place and how the photographer feels.

Last fall, we went to Apulia. A whole party of us: myself, my mom, my husband, and our three kids, including a 4-month-old baby. I had been living in a state of overwhelm for a few months by then (adjusting to three kids is no joke), and the trip felt more like a welcome change of scenery than an actual vacation.

So when I picked up my camera, I naturally turned it to photograph in portrait orientation. There are many reasons to choose between landscape or portrait. One of the strongest ones for me is that portrait photos feel more introspective. Landscape gives breadth, opens up space. Portrait allows me to focus, to tune into subtlety, to cancel out noise.

That is what I needed then, so I created a portrait of Apulia, a more grounded, steady view of this region full of light and colour.

I first looked at your photos and wondered why everything was in portrait – which I liked so much. I first thought this might be an Olympus Pen F or such. And then I read your text and liked so much your thinking the reason why you felt, portrait was the right thing to take. Thank you for that.
