Highgate cemetery in North London has long been a place I loved to visit and photograph. And yet, having photographed it before with my digital cameras, something was always missing – the depth and richness of that green color, the peacefulness, stillness, and mystery of the place… This time I ventured out with my new Mamiya, still with the excitement of just learning to use it. At one moment, I came across an incredible scene tucked away in the corner above all the crypts. There was a white carpet of petals under the tree with a doorframe in the background, and in the light breeze, more petals were still falling. I spent a long while at this spot, and instead of snapping away on my DSLR (had I brought it), I took just two images. This time, I knew this was finally the right camera, as looking at the final image I felt all the same emotions I did when standing there. That to me is the power of film I am in the process of discovering – this ability to bring back a physical trace and the emotion of the place we are capturing.
