Today, we’re featuring a stunning travel series from film photographer Kendall Wheeler of his adventures through Big Sur, California. Here is more from Kendall about capturing this beautiful location…

Finally crossed off a major bucket list item since living in California: Big Sur. Spent two full days driving and exploring all the breathtaking views, starting in Manhattan Beach (LA) and reaching all the way to the tip of Monterrey. While there was no shortage of dynamic views in those 6 hours of driving, I felt we hardly scratched the surface.

Here were some of the moments captured, mostly shot on Portra 800, but a couple on Portra 400. Shooting on a 28mm lens on 35mm film was the perfect focal length for the wide landscape in my opinion. I also really like the 800 speed film which allowed me to maintain a narrow aperture while shooting at a quick enough shutter.

Full disclosure: My favorite pic of this trip was a result of my stumbling behind a bush since there were no bathrooms and was a good reminder to leave room for unplanned scenes. 🙂

Gorgeous photos! I too am a big fan of the 28mm. Very interesting choice with portra 800 in what looks like very sunny conditions. Love the colors and tones you achieved, as well as the composition. Were the colors straight out of camera or did you edit at all. Really beautiful!

Hey thanks a ton, Robert! It was my first time experimenting with 800 and excited how it turned out. Really had to knock down the aperture with the bright ones..as far as colors I added a bit of warmth in post and that’s it:) would be fun to go back to these locations and try 120 film. Cheers!
