As an artist, one of my greatest inspirations is the mystery of the past. I often think about a world before the conveniences of modern man and how people, who were just like you and me in every sense, found ways to thrive against odds that would seem insurmountable to many of us today. Because of that, traveling to the Ireland, Scotland, and England is a treasure trove of inspiration to me. There, time seems less linear. You can’t walk five feet without stumbling upon some kind of relic of times long since passed. Whether it’s a suspiciously shaped impression in the ground that looks an awful lot like a Viking age burial or a towering 15th century castle, it is nearly impossible to escape the reminder of the human experience through the ages.
During my most recent trip to Scotland, I wanted to find a way to express the feeling of overlap between the past and present in a more artistic way. So, I reserved one roll of film to experiment with double exposures between my home in North America and Skara Brae, a UNESCO world heritage site on Orkney Island. I wanted to express the inexplicable imprint that the ancestors of modern man have left on us and highlight the lingering desire to understand what we come from. I am particularly pleased with how these turned out and have included my three favorites in this submission.
