Today, we’re featuring travel story from film photographer Kate Bunting. Here is more from Kate about visiting Little St. Simons Island in Georgia…
Last November, my family and I headed down to Little St. Simons Island, one of Georgia’s Golden Isles. Little St. Simons is a privately owned island with 11,000 acres of wilderness. It is an amazing place to visit if you enjoy nature.
We drove down past Savannah and caught the private ferry to the island. When you stay on LSS, you are part of a group – you eat family style each night and participate in naturalist planned activities together. It’s a great way to meet new people who enjoy similar interests. My family and I stayed in the Michael Cottage, a small cottage with two bedrooms and a porch.
Each day, we got up and out and walked around, then headed to breakfast where the naturalists would let us know what activities they had planned for the day. We were primarily there for birding, so we participated in any activity where we would get to see some cool birds. They have five naturalists on staff there to plan interesting and informative activities and share knowledge on a variety of topics. We learned a lot about the trees growing on the island, different types of birds that visited the island, and the history of who owned the island. They took us to the beach to look at shorebirds, bird blinds to see what birds were currently on the island, and to some ponds to look at the alligators.
The island is one of the most significant natural areas that remains on the East Coast. We saw some amazing things, met some interesting people, and really just had a great time. I saw the most beautiful sunset. The colors there are truly unreal. I highly recommend a visit to Little St. Simons for anyone who is up for a unique adventure in nature. I’m glad I was able to capture some of the island’s beauty on film.
