Today, we’re featuring a stunning series of experimental images from film photographer Mallory Brooks. Here is more from Mallory about how she used double exposures and experimental film techniques to capture her trip to Los Angeles…

I’m coming upon 3 years shooting film and have really leaned into experimenting with the medium. Thanks to SIWF Insiders, I discovered my latest favorite technique–double exposures. Specifically, I’m a bit obsessed with overlaying my images with bursts of color. On a recent trip to Los Angeles, I went all-in with these color overlay double exposures, and I am in awe of how they take an ordinary scene and elevate it into a piece of art.

Hey Mallory – these are beautiful, thanks for sharing! What did you use for the color overlay layer – lights?? I love the vibrant color and graphic shapes. It reminds me of Psychedelic Blues Film. And it pairs so well with the California vibe. Really pretty!

Hi Jamie, thanks so much! The color overlays are a combination of gradients, shapes and some images from a Psych Blues roll that was accidentally developed blank. It’s pretty easy to make shapes and gradients in Photoshop. Hope this helps!

Thanks!! Looks great.
