This week, we’re featuring a series of black and white film images from photographer Rob Ulitski. Rob took a fresh look at his hometown of Portsmouth, UK and captured the beautiful character of this seaside town on film. Here is more from Rob about this series and shooting film…
Since lockdown, I’ve been taking one day a week to go out and shoot some photos on film and recently decided to shoot my first ever roll of black and white 35mm.
My rekindled love for film has allowed me to see a variety of places through a different lens, and this series depicts my hometown of Portsmouth, UK. On a wet and windy day in early December, I headed to the historic area of Old Portsmouth and took shots of various scenes that caught my eye.
Film photography for me is a meditation of sorts, allowing time to enjoy the present moment, and to think hard about which subjects would be the best use of the limited amount of shots on the reel.
For me, shooting on film is a way of being connected to the past and present and a way to slow down and enjoy the moment. I was born in the early 90s and had the chance to experiment with a few film cameras before digital took over, and it’s nice to now rediscover the format and use it as an adult.
Analog cameras and films used: Canon EOS 500N (Find at KEH Camera or on eBay) | Silberra U400 (Find at B&H Photo)
