Today, we’re featuring an inspiring collection of images from the attendees of The Wandering Artist workshop from last fall in Marfa, Texas. Here is more from The Wandering Artist founder, Sara Johansen, about the retreat and exploring Marfa…
I’m forever wanting and needing more time for creative freedom and time to experiment with my photography. I need time to create just to create, so I wanted to foster a space where others could have their own experience of creating to create. The Wandering Artist retreat was born out of this notion, knowing that personal work is professional work, and that we all need those moments to explore in our work in order to grow our work.
When planning the retreat, I always start out with the location, bearing in mind to find a spot that will be brimming with inspiration, yet not so noisy that it hinders the ability to sit still and take it all in. Enter in Marfa, Texas. Settled in the middle of nowhere in west Texas, Marfa has become a town that serves as a cultural center for artists.
The retreat was a smaller group, but it led to greater connections between all attendees. We laughed, cried, talked about all things photography and art, and connected on business struggles and successes. We all were given a space and chance to create based on what we wanted to create, not what we felt we needed to create. We were given space to explore and be inspired by our surroundings and each other.
It was a beautiful weekend, and it’s my honor to share the work of the attendees of The Wandering Artist – Meet Me In Marfa.
