Our latest feature is a New Mexico travel series from film photographer Jake Peterson. Jake captured the beautiful sites near Santa Fe on medium format and 35mm film. Here is more from Jake about his time in New Mexico…
Northern New Mexico is a sacred place which I had just wandered in – lost across the Colorado border, not quite sure where I was bound – though Santa Fe was a good start. The roads were long and coated with a dry desert that soared high above the earth, thousands of feet up. People say that the altitude places you closer to the heavens, which, to a certain degree, you can feel even if you don’t consider the stars above to hold some savior. In this sacred place, you’ll find many churches nestled in the mountainside. These locales are captivating and can truly draw you to them for eternity, just looking out from their views to the open desert. Stopping, I took this in – until – we spotted a black wall forming above the village of Chimayo. Thunder growled through the valleys! And so we drove – running from the wall as far as we could till it was dark, and we were in Santa Fe.

Good photos. I enjoyed them. Unfortunately, many of the images posted on film photography websites are subpar. I would be interested to know how the photographer processed these images.

Ps. The photographs are outstanding both technically and artistically. Many are rendered in pastel tones and I would be interested in how the photographer achieved this look.

I have been working in the realm of photography and photographic sales for nearly forty years. My father first opened his print gallery in 1938, and I followed in the profession beginning in the late ’70s. In the words of my late father Nicoll, “if there are goats in the gallery, then there is goat on the walls.” This cherished advice has stuck with me for many decades. Mr. Jake Peterson, I can tell that your work is of an excellent standard of quality. I hope my father’s advice serves you well in your career. Thank you for the pleasurable visual experience your pieces have provided an old man. Tears return to my eyes for the first time since the passing of my sweet Julette. LS
