Today, we’re featuring a beautiful series of images from film photographer Raufan Yusup. Here is more from Raufan about capturing Shirakawa-go, Japan on film…
I’m Raufan, an Indonesian living in Japan. I’ve been shooting film since 2017 and have exclusively used film ever since. In this fast-paced world, slowing down is a gift—that’s why I love film photography.
This time, I want to share my latest trip in Japan. One of my earliest travels here was to Shirakawa-go, a place that holds beautiful memories for me. It has been six years since my last visit, and now that I live in Japan, I wanted to return and relive the feelings I had the first time I came here.
A lot has changed, yet some things remain the same. I spent my time capturing the small corners of the city, reminiscing while also creating new memories. Photography allows me to do that—to pause, reflect, and appreciate fleeting moments. The slow, deliberate nature of film photography makes the experience even more special, allowing me to truly immerse myself in the place.
Analog cameras and films used: Minolta TC-1 (Find on eBay) | Kodak Portra 160 (Find on Amazon), Fuji Industrial 400 (Find on eBay)

Raufan, It’s good to see you allowed at least 1 stop of extra exposure for the snow in your photographs. Many photographers forget that auto-exposure cameras like the Minolta TC-1 (also hand-held light meters) under-expose for the snow and that results in grey ‘muddy’ snow in their photographs. Transparency film is especially vulnerable due to its restricted exposure latitude.
