My partner Daniel surprised me with a trip to Bergen, Norway for my birthday last November. Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains, and you can easily take the Fløibanen (funicular) up Mount Fløyen to see the beautiful view over Bergen city centre. There is a Troll Forest to explore at the top, alongside friendly goats!
Bergenhus fortress is located at the entrance of Bergen harbour, and is one of the oldest and best preserved stone fortifications in Norway. It offers great views of the harbour, and has a long history as a royal seat and military seat of power.
Bryggen is a series of Hanseatic heritage commercial buildings lining up the eastern side of the Vågen harbour in the city of Bergen and has been on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites since 1979. It’s interesting to explore, and has lots of tiny, unique stores. Bergen is full of street art, so you want to keep your eyes peeled while you’re walking around.
