Today, we’re featuring a series from film photographer Lissa Raylin. Lissa captured the effects of the spreading 2020 California wildfires as she traveled down Highway 101-1 on the coast. Here is more from Lissa about photographing this series…
We turned back at the Mendocino-Sonoma County line. A new fire broke out that night, smoke was growing thicker in the West. The sky was an enveloping shade of rust, and the haze, some signal that creeps over the horizon on afternoons filled with glorious, dramatic mist, had begun to sting our eyes.
Afternoons of masked hikers, air quality reports, warning signs spoken and in print pointed to a confrontation altogether opposed to the coast highway, a place I thought of suspended in time, but most aligned to its restlessness.
