Today, we’re featuring an incredible project from film photographer Mickaël André. In Mickaël’s project AJAR, he communicates emotions through abstract black and white film photography. Here is more from Mickaël about his work…
My name is Mickaël André. I was born thirty eight years ago in Paris, and live in Toulouse, south of France for twenty five years now.
My journey through photography is a way for me to explore my inner self. I try to give birth to images that could make me feel that particular connection I feel when I experience something created by somebody else. It sounds quite paradoxical, but some recurrent themes and subjects in the pictures I keep when editing helps me to understand some unknown fragments within myself.
I don’t need to associate my pictures to any place or any time; I think I want them to be simple and universal. I don’t document anything other than emotions anyone should be able to experience in life someday. I see them as some ajar doors leading inside each of us.
These images are part of my ongoing project called “AJAR,” and they do not form a series as we see in today’s photography trends.
I use different camera according to what moment of the day I shoot and depending on my mood. There’s a Voigtalnder Bessa R3A, Ricoh GR1, Minox 35 GT-E, Lomo LC-A, OLympus XA, various Rangerfinder from the 70’s or some homemade pinholes I mount on The Bessa. My workflow is very simple: I mostly use Ilford HP5 pushed to 3200 or some Kodak Tri-X at 400 or 800. Then, I develop by myself and print in my own darkroom.
