Today, we’re featuring a beautiful travel series from film photographer Krishan Lewis. Here is more from Krishan about visiting Maui…
A close friend of mine got the chance to move to Maui and chase a dream of his, and I always admired his willingness to live life so freely. I had a perfect chance to go see him around the time of his birthday to share some of that feeling, and also take my cameras and capture a part of the world I haven’t been to yet.
I was glad to go to an island in Hawaii that seemed calmer, quieter, and truly connected with nature. There is so much to appreciate and also respect while you’re there. I tried to plan out my film use carefully beforehand, but in the end I just shot freely and captured the parts of the experience that I could. I look forward to going back sometime and making more memories there.
This was also my first time traveling so far with all my gear. I have been working with the RB67 for a while now but just recently got the Pentax 645. The images all came out clear, which I’m glad for, because the focus was a little tricky to get down at first. I love the shallow depth of field/low aperture number I’m able to get on it, the fast-paced accessibility, and also the portability. I knew I needed this to get good medium format shots while being able to move around safely during our hikes and travels. I still got some nice photos on the RB67, but that was more useful during slower, scenic experiences. Either way, using film always demands that you be more intentional and focused while shooting, and I’m so glad that I have nice photos to hold onto from when I was there.
